BAND DAY 2017 DATE ANNOUNCED
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3 at the JOHN PAUL JONES ARENA
We are excited to announce a new format for the 2017 Band Day. On SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3 we will assemble an honor band of 410 high school students to perform with the University of Virginia Cavalier Marching Band in concert at the John Paul Jones Arena. The concert will be held at 3 pm. On December 3, prior to the concert, we will spend a few hours rehearsing both in sectional masterclasses and as a group and provide lunch. Woodwinds, brass, battery percussion, colorguard and twirlers are all welcome to apply. This will be a once-in-a-lifetime concert experience.
The nomination process will be HIGHLY selective. Nominations will be submitted through high school band directors only. Not every nominee will be accepted. We will require accurate information regarding chair & leadership history in the home band program and chair history in the Virginia All-State, District and County Bands.
Deadline for submitting nominations is Monday, September 4. At that point selections will be made (we will have alternates) and we will notify students directly by September 15. Nominations will be open to 10th, 11th and 12th grade students. Final decisions will be based on the criteria mentioned above as well as instrumentation:
- 30 flute/piccolo
- 40 clarinet
- 40 saxophone (alto or tenor only)
- 70 trumpet
- 40 horn
- 40 trombone
- 30 baritone
- 40 tuba
- 40 drumline
- 30 colorguard
- 10 twirler
The heading of our concert will be HOLIDAY WITH THE HOOS, but we intend to play many different styles of music. JPJ is not only the home of UVa Basketball, but it is one of the premier concert venues on the east coast. It has hosted to major artists from across all forms music and stage (rock, hip-hop, county, pop and more). This will be a very special event, and I hope you are able to nominate some of your students to attend. CHECK BACK IN AUGUST TO SUBMIT YOUR NOMINATIONS.
