All camps will be held on Grounds at the University of Virginia!
All campers will experience life as a Wahoo. They will stay in the dorms & rehearse in our new
Hunter Smith Band Building—a $13 million, state-of-the-art rehearsal facility. Our camps are unique because UVa faculty members teach the camp and our best UVa students play alongside the campers every step of the way, providing a one-of-a-kind leadership and performance experience.
Drum Major Camp – July 12-16 ($395)
Each day of camp will be packed with leadership seminars, hands-on experience teaching large and small groups, marching fundamentals, and more! We believe that the best way for drum majors to improve is to experience conducting in front of live groups as much as possible, rather than learning conducting to a tape. Students will work one-on-one with our staff and drum majors to improve conducting technique and leadership skills. Our overriding goal is to not only build better drum majors, but empower students to build a better team environment with their bands at home.
Student Leader and Musicianship – July 13-16 ($350)
We believe that all great bands must have great leaders, and you don’t need a title to be a leader. This camp focuses on the skills needed to make each person a better player on their instrument while giving them important tools to share with their sections at home. It would be a valuable camp for individuals who are in a section leader, band captain or other leadership role as well as anyone wishing to become a better player on their instrument. We will provide participants a chance to conduct sectional rehearsals and learn valuable lessons on team building, leadership and teaching. This camp is beneficial for rising freshmen or experienced veteran marchers.
Color Guard Camp – July 13-16 ($350)
The color guard instructor of the Cavalier Marching Band, Marc Paulo Guzman, along with our student leaders, will teach fundamental flag basics and choreography designed to enhance any program. Individuals, groups, and entire color guards are welcome to attend. The Color Guard Camp is designed to enhance existing technique for guard, equipment training, and basic dance techniques. We will also focus on leadership skills, cleaning/tech techniques for improving group clarity, designing choreography with a focus on musicality, and one-on-one feedback regarding performance and technique. There will be an opportunity for participants to focus on weapon technique (rifle and sabre), but most of the camp will focus on flag.
Marching Percussion Camp – July 13-16 ($350)
This camp is beneficial to the individual percussionist as well as the entire school drumline. The percussion camp will focus on developing and enhancing the marching percussion technique and leadership. The camp is taught by UVa staff and students.
Feature Twirler Camp – July 13-16 ($350)
This camp is open to middle school and high school age twirlers. Instruction is led by former UVa feature twirler Amy West. Participants will have a highly individualized experience so they can expand their repertoire of tricks and techniques and solidify the fundamentals they have already mastered.
High/Middle School Concert Band Camps – July 9-12 ($350)
Our concert band camps are open to any rising high school or middle school band member with a minimum of 1 year playing experience in band (must be a rising 7-12 grade student). We will have three concert bands functioning during the camp (auditioned on the first day of camp). Our camps focus on refining individual tone and technique while teaching ensemble skills as well. We will perform a challenging program of band literature. The camp will include daily sectional time, full ensemble rehearsals, chamber music, masterclasses, theory lessons and private instruction. Auditions will be held on the first day of camp for all campers who wish to be considered for the high school concert band camp.
