  1. Leadership Scholarships for Head Section Leaders, Section Leaders, Drill Instructors, Drum Majors, and Senior Leaders

All remaining students in every section can audition/interview for a Leadership Scholarship. Scholarship applications and audition materials can be obtained by emailing one of the band directors.    Musical excerpts will be from the previous season’s pregame and halftime music.  Interviews for these scholarships will be during February and March.   Applicants should contact bands@virginia.edu or 434-982-5347 to schedule an audition time.

The leadership qualities of each relevant scholarship area are follows:

  • Head Section Leaders: Students who show the ability to lead rehearsals in the area of musical performance and technique.
  • Section Leaders: Students who show the ability to assist in the rehearsals of the individual sections in music performance and technique.
  • Drill Instructors: Students who show the ability to assist in the teaching of drill formations and visuals.
  • Drum Majors: Students who conduct the band on the field and provide leadership to the entire band.
  • Senior Leader: A senior leader assists the entire student staff and has the experience to provide assistance with on field marching and musical performance.  A senior leader should possess qualities of the section leaders, drill instructors, drum majors, and student conductors.  To be considered for a Leadership Scholarship as a Senior Leader, a student should have at least two years of experience and have fulfilled another leadership role in the band.

The amounts for a Leadership Scholarship range from $250 to $500 depending on the leadership roles awarded and experience of the individual.

3.  Basketball Band and/or Wind Ensemble Scholarships

Students in the Cavalier Marching Band, who also participate in the Basketball Band and/or Wind Ensemble, can qualify for an additional scholarship.  There are students devoted to the success of these different ensembles.  Both the Basketball Band and the Wind Ensemble are auditioned ensembles.  Students would need to audition for each ensemble first, before being considered for a scholarship.  Applications for this scholarship can be found online.  Scholarships will be awarded in the fall and spring semester for these ensembles.  Applicants should contact bands@virginia.edu or 434-982-5347 to schedule an audition time.

The amounts for a Basketball Band and/or Wind Ensemble Scholarship range from $100 to $250.  The awarded amounts are determined by the audition result, the demand of the instrument played, years of participation, and the impact on the performance quality an individual contributes.
